We often see the phrase "We build schools for the future". Differential learning environment is divided into three parts: learning space in school, autonomous learning space and teamwork space. These spaces and interior decorations enrich the daily classroom landscape for different groups of people to choose from. In many parts of the world, classrooms are usually arranged with rows of tables and hard wooden chairs behind them. Students sit on chairs and listen to teachers and blackboards.


However, the space design of Shanghai Adekot School is different from that of traditional schools. Shanghai Adekot School follows the Montessori educational philosophy, that is, to respect students’ nature, to complete learning from autonomous behavior and interests.

Shanghai Adcote School is an overseas branch of Adcote School in Britain. It is located at the foot of Sheshan Mountain in Songjiang, Shanghai, with beautiful environment and perfect facilities.

Shanghai Adcote School believes that the students’ union instinctively actively interacts with the external environment. What adults need to do is to observe their needs and help and provide a suitable external environment. In the design, the concept of "implicit management" is used to change management from "man-made" which makes teachers nervous to "environmental behavior", so that students can take the lead in space, and teachers are more comfortable to carry out educational work rather than educational management.

Architectural Outlook



This case is designed to create a more natural and warm growing environment for students. Shanghai Adcote School believes that this kind of environment is very important for students’ growth. It is the place where children live, an environment full of interest and vitality. It enables students to liberate their nature, cultivate self-awareness and interest in an environment of resistance and fear, and prepare for the next life.

The re-partition of the facade of the building brings different views within the project, thus making the whole building more open. The use of aluminum, anti-corrosion wood, white glass and other materials corresponds to the use of interior decoration materials. In addition, the design method eliminates the feeling of closure, at the same time more in line with the height of students’ sight, and introduces more distant scenery and vision, so that students and teachers can enjoy it.

Design highlights



The whole building is rebuilt according to the scale of students'age. Whether it is stairs, handrails, doors, windows, etc. corresponding to the scale of students, students can achieve safety and accessibility inside. The purpose is to make the body feeling of life develop in an all-round way.

The powerful functions of libraries collide with the possibilities brought by advanced technology. The quiet and peaceful atmosphere enables students to calm down and read, study, think and relax. The height of the floor also brings 360 degrees of unobstructed vision.

Faced with a variety of alternative learning environments, team work can be carried out in a single-dimensional environment or a seating arrangement. The platform environment can be closed or students can overlook the whole area or the outside environment.

Students can sit on stairs together, find a separate reading place in a soft-shaped reading tube, or anywhere they want to sit - alone or with other students sitting on benches, windowsills or on the ground.
